“Aren’t you afraid you’re going to get GIANT muscles if you do that sort of stuff?”
If I converted how many times I’ve been asked this over the years into scoops of ice cream I’d be able to fill a swimming pool!
Its a very real and strong misconception which I believed wholeheartedly for many many years.
It started with rock climbing where the aim was to be as strong as humanly possible but weigh as little as possible and MOST importantly “not look like a man”. Yes I thought I had a very high possibility of looking like a man.......
When you’re aiming to be on the lean side then its not surprising to see that your muscles stick out a wee bit, a bit of a catch 22 really, super strong but not muscular? Its something I struggled to get my head around and when people are constantly asking you if you’re concerned about starting to look like a man, its rather difficult to dismiss it.
My diet back then consisted of chocolate bars, V and ‘up and go’ featured as the healthy option. As I progressed through the grades I became plagued with constant injuries. It's nots surprising when I look back on it now but at the time it was incredibly frustrating! So climbing got put on hold and CrossFit came along, AGAIN I was exceptionally concerned that doing all this weight lifting and kettlebell swinging would eventuate with me having manly muscles! I held off lifting too much (I actually despised seeing it come up in so many workouts!) the only pictures of weight lifters I’d ever seen were those 200kg insanely strong individuals, obviously there was no possible way I could ever look like that even if I ate like it was my job! BUT still the thought of that was a concern.
Then something changed, I started wanting to do better, lift more and create some fairly lofty goals. I decided at that time, I would accept the fact that to achieve these goals I was going to have to run the risk of growing GIANT muscles!
Now a year down the track I have been training my butt off and where on earth are these GIANT muscles! Sure I’ve 'toned up' and gained muscle mass, my weight changed, I was around 53kg coming from rock climbing and now sit at 58-60kg, shock horror........ But........BUT, I still fit all the same clothes and I’m actually SMALLER than when I was climbing, because I have less body fat!!.
We are all very different shapes and sizes, its true, some people will tend to grow bigger muscles than others but to do that takes an EXCEPTIONAL amount of hard work!
So if theres anyone out there thats afraid of what Crossfit might do to your body then feel free to come and see me and judge for yourself.
