Today we're going to talk spotting. We ONLY ever spot each other on two barbell exercises, the back squat, and the bench press. And seeing as we don't do a lot of bench press, we'll just talk about the squat. Coach Gareth Campbell is an honourary member of the CFNZ whanau, currently living in London, and I'm going to let him talk to you more about it...
"I wanted to broach the topic of spotting, primarily for the squat as I have seen some interesting interpretations and have had feedback from other members with concerns over spotting in general.
The role of the spotter:
Simple…. ensure a safe lift.
What is a safe lift?
Pretty easy question to answer really. A lift where the lifters form is not compromised during the movement and they don’t drop the barbell on top of themselves or get stuck in the bottom and panic.
Notice I mentioned form first?"
