We've had 2 or 3 people walk into CFNZ with no CrossFit experience, and do a muscle up. This is inspiring, yet mostly devastating to the person who has been busting their arse for 6-12 months to get one, building their pressing strength with dips, working on chest to bar pullups, and a steady diet of shoulder stabilising Turkish Get Ups, rows and scap pushups.
There is no way to prevent the human mind from just plain wishing that they could do a muscle up that easy, as well as perhaps wishing that naturally gifted person would dislocate their shoulder and bugger off to hospital so that they can get on with practicing............
But that's all you can do.
Carry on practicing I mean, not shooting daggers from your eyes at that damn natural.
And then practice some more.
Two people who have really stood out in my mind lately for their consistency of practice are Lynn Murphy and Vince Yu. Vince is chasing a planche pushup (that's a pushup with both feet off the ground people!!) and Lynn told me close to 2 years ago that she wanted a 100kg deadlift.
Well Lynn recently pulled 105kg off the floor like it was nothing, and just missed 110kg......
And as you can see above, Vince is making some pretty steady inroads on his goal too. But he might have another couple of years at least of dedicated, consistent practice ahead of him to reach his final goal.
Can you apply yourself like that to YOUR goals?
