Ruth Sullman - from 0 to 241 rep hero.
Ok, Ruth was never a zero in my books, let's get that straight, it's just a play on the classic saying. I wanted to just give a shout out to Ruth for her awesome efforts these past few weeks.
Ruth is just the 4th female in our gym to have achieved a muscle up, getting her first one only a few weeks ago, after some dedicated practice. With the make up of Crossfit Open workout 12.4 including a ton of fatiguing wallballs and double unders under a tight time limit, followed by muscle ups, there were people with much more experience on the gym rings than her, wondering if they would be able to get even one muscle up to get a score of at least 241, and to distance themselves in the rankings from the thousands who couldn't.
Ruth was in the gym on Sunday, tackling 12.4 all by herself, with just a handful of us there to support. She chipped her way steadily through the wallballs and double unders, arriving at the rings with just 50seconds left on the clock. Still breathing hard, grip smoked from the skipping rope, it wasn't until there was 10 seconds remaining, that she was able to go for it.
A textbook kip and pull, floated her up above the rings easily, but as she struggled to press out of the transition, the clock cruelly ticked over 12:00, and continued as she kicked, and strained and slowly found her way to lockout. We all erupted with cheers, and then en mass, all heads swivelled towards me, chief validator, everyone hoping that I would perhaps mention a loophole that states the rep counts as long as her feet were off the ground before time was up or something like that, but at the same time everyone knowing that wasn't how it works in CrossFit - every second counts for a reason.
And none more so than Ruth herself, who didn't even throw the slightest hopeful glance in my direction. She knew she hadn't done it in time, and she wasn't upset (well, not TOO much....), she achieved what she wanted, a muscle up on the back of a gruelling workout to show that she didn't just fluke them fresh in practice.
And she drove that point home as soon as she had recovered slightly from the workout, by banging out another half dozen muscle ups, and even starting work on stringing two together.
Well done Ruth, you're an inspiration.
