Happy weekend folks! Taz is chiming in from Santa Cruz with todays post, to rev you all up for what ESPN is calling the best 3 days of sport you can watch for your money.
The 2011 CrossFit Games are next week, who is amped? As a CrossFit affiliate and community, we are really excited about how far CrossFit has come as a sport.
Did you know that during the first CrossFit Games in 2007, Greg Glassman went to an ATM machine and drew out $1200ish from his own bank account?
This was the prize money for the first place getters ($600 each). This year, the top male/female will be winning $250, 000 each. That is a huge growth for its fifth year!
What does this mean for us as a community?
- some of us want to compete for fun (The Open- first stage of qualification)
- some of us want to compete to qualify (regionals/games)
- some of us want to support and be a part of the excitement as a community.
- some of us don’t give a rats ass!
The challenge now as a community is to be able to separate CrossFit the ‘sport’ vs CrosFit the ‘workout program’.
Here is a foolproof system I have devised:
1. I don’t give a rats ass
-That's fine! No one is judging you, keep working out as usual.
2. I want to compete for fun (local comps and perhaps The Open) to be a part of the community and competition buzz
-Cool, keep coming to classes as per usual
3.I want to compete for fun, but my goal is to do the Open as’rxd
-Great, keep coming to classes as per usual and practice your weaknesses before/after class.
4. I want to compete at the Open, then Regionals and try to qualify for the games in the future.
-That is great, come to classes as per usual + why not join the Endurance club or/and Barbell club to increase your training volume/improve your technique. You could join our recently formed Competition Club and train to be selected for the Competition team.
Sounds pretty simple to me, however – some where along this CrossFit sporting journey, things seemed to have become quite complicated, so I have pre-prepared some answers to questions that might be going through your head.
“But I suck at HSPU!”
ANSWER: So do I, that’s why I practice them and perform workouts with them in it. But I am also patient with my progress and understand that it takes time.
“ I am not strong enough!” “But I’m different!", "I need more training!”
ANSWER 1: Be patient, you have only been CrossFitting for 6 months
ANSWER 2: Perhaps join the Barbell Club + keep CrossFitting
ANSWER 3: See answer 1........
So, as you can see, while we are pumped about the CrossFit Games season extending over six months, as a community we have a a range of people trying to achieve a range of goals. Let's work together to help each other attain these goals while having fun!
